Week X: Say It Ain’t So: Pats Fall 17-14 to Jets in Week-Ten Falter
(Sounds of exhale). And so ends the Pat’s remarkable 57 game streak without consecutive losses, at the hands of the New York Jets. For the first time in four years, The Pats have lost in back to back weeks, and coincidentally, the last time they did so, it was at the deliverance of the same team.
But this time around, for a sprinkle of added insult, it was former Pat’s defensive coordinator-turned-Jet’s head coach and Bill Belichick protégé Eric Mangini who orchestrated the victory.
My senses tell me that somewhere, ol’ Bill is killing mad.
But that’s got more to do with the direction of the loss on Sunday rather than any mentor/disciple rivalry that might have played out both on and off the field. All told, the Jets were the team who wanted it more, and it showed. When push came to shove, they were the ones who muscled their way passed New England’s big front seven in crucial third and fourth down situations, especially in the remaining three minutes of the game when time consumption became the M.O.
“We fell short” Tom Brady said of the performance, pausing to reiterate what he must have realized was an accurate way to summarize. “We fell short.”
During Sunday’s game, Brady threw for 255 yards with one touchdown and a pick. But the numbers aren’t the cause for alarm, it’s the ineffectiveness. Normally, I’m reluctant to lend a lot credence to the question “What’s wrong with quarterback so and so?” But in this case, I think the question needs to be asked, because as of late Tom Brady has been far from his usual self.
So what could it possibly be? Throughout the year, it’s been trial and error with the receiving core, and it can be said that Brady probably at this point doesn’t quite know what he has. But that still doesn’t explain the passes. Three or four times during Sunday’s game he threw well behind his receivers in open field. So what then? Mental toughness? Well we all know that’s not the case, although his in-the-pocket composure has been ostensibly shaky in the past few games. The porous offensive line could also be at fault here. How about injury? Well, for some time now, there has been speculation surrounding Brady’s physical status, as he now wears an elbow brace during games and is constantly moving to stay warm on the sidelines. How about his tentative performance this week? Yes, it was visible, but on many counts that could be attributed to coming off last week’s loss to the Colt’s, where he threw four interceptions.
So you get the idea. No matter how much sleuthing we do, there is no definite answer as to why Tom Brady has fallen off his game, but yet the fact remains. So many times in the past (my sources tell me 22 to be exact), we have seen Brady lead the offense in a come-from behind victory with little time remaining. Such was not the case on Sunday, as the Patriot’s failed to follow up on a 69 yard drive-turned-Caldwell (WR) touchdown that put them a field goal away from tying. In the end, there just wasn’t enough time left for Brady to get the team within range, and the game ended when Jet’s DE Sean Ellis forced a Brady fumble as the final seconds expired.
For the second straight week, the Patriot’s have exhibited multiple turnover games. On Sunday, the Jets capitalized on both, including a Doug Gabriel (WR) fumble in Jet’s territory, which looms large in the broader scope.
All said, the Patriot’s just haven’t been playing well. Period. And as Pat’s fans, we have been accustomed, or should I say ‘spoiled’ to the team’s consistency- their week in, week out level of preparedness. Maybe Mangini knew their routine all too well, because when the gun smoke cleared at Gillette, the Pat’s looked predictable on both sides of the ball.
“Two in a row, I can’t remember the last time we did it,” said Teddy Bruschi on the loss. “We’ve got to get back on the winning road if we want to be AFC champions.”
Well with the loss, the AFC straight and narrow just got a little rocky. The New York Jets are now just one game behind the Patriot’s for control of the east.
