28-3 Handling at the Razor, on to round two
It wasn’t a storied first half, with the score 7-3 Patriots going into the locker room, but the third and fourth quarters proved every bit the stomping I knew it would be. Not everyone had the game mapped as a blow out, however, with the spread showing the Pats as 7.5 point favorites. But to their discredit, the Jags were a shadow of the 12-4 record they boasted coming into Gillette, which was one of the best ever for a wildcard team. Byron Leftwich never seemed real comfortable out there, the offensive line faltered and caved into the pressure, the temperature plummeted, and the bottom just plain fell out on those warm weather jungle cats.
“Clearly they are a championship team over there, and they got the best of us,” understated Jaguar quarterback Byron Leftwich after the game. ‘Yes Mr. Leftwich, thanks for the ball washing’ would have been the appropriate response from any one member of the Patriots.
So with this big win, an unprecedented 10th consecutive playoff victory, comes (aside from the full-on reincarnation of their championship stature) a playoff ticket into mile high stadium next Saturday 8pm. Et. The Broncos beat the Patriots 28-20 in week six, and the Pats are 3 point underdogs in this week’s divisional match up. My current Longview, Patriots 24 Broncos 10, beating the Colts in the AFC Championship, and marching into Detroit covered in horse blood.
Offense
Tom Brady threw for three touchdowns, an 11 yard reception to Troy Brown, a three yard pass to David Givens and an incredible 63 yard hook-up with Ben Watson, who muscled his way past three defenders to crack open the game 21-3 in the third.
Defense
The veteran big man Willie McGinest set a postseason record with 4.5 sacks, along with Colvin and Seymour, who had 1 and .5 respectively. The defensive line putting relentless pressure on Leftwich was a key component in the Patriot’s ability to dismantle the Jaguar’s offense. Asante Samuel had a 73 yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to deliver the coup-de-grace.
