Ladies and gentlemen: At this time of year, every year, southcoast247.com
brings you the Best Of edition. In kind, I, Craig P. Dixon, humbly offer my
Best Moment of 2006.
A lot of things happened this year that many would argue deserve the award.
Some claim that the execution of Saddam Hussein gets the honor.
Wrong. There goes America's best chance at getting the damned country
straightened out. If we popped that guy back in power, he'd dot the i's and
cross the t's in no time. And I've got to hand it to Saddam: He walked right
up to the gallows and kept on talking up to the moment the trapdoor fell
open. Pretty ballsy.
Exactly the opposite of what our President wanted.
Many have said the American voter is worthy of the nod, for finally rousing
from slumber and voting the worst Congress in American history from office.
Well, I already wrote up an article on that moment. You can find it here.
As you may gather from the article, the American voter doesn't deserve a
damned thing. You don't pet your dog when he eats shit, do you? That'd be
ignorant, and encourage the animal to do it, and worse, again.
Well, the same goes for the American voter. We are the owners of our
government. We tell it what to do. We've been granted that power. Except the
majority of American voters don't seem to realize it. For a dozen years,
they kept petting the shit-eating dog that was Congress. It was only after
the dog started shitting all over the owner that it got reprimanded. And
that took YEARS to happen.
Nope. There's no award for ignorance, America. Only punishment. And we'll be
chewing on those awards, the legacy of a Republican Congress, for the next
decade or so.
A few morons (including the morons at TIME) nominated those YouTube dopes
for blessing the web viewing public with, well, nothing, and making a
billion bucks for it. Those guys from YouTube did one thing for the world:
Decreased our cumulative hope in humanity.
Well, enough suspense. The winner of this year's Best Moment of 2006...drum
roll please....
12:00 AM, January 1, 2007: The moment 2006 ended and 2007 began.
Admit it. 2006 wasn't a great year in New Bedford history. It began with a
maniac attacking Puzzles. Then he killed a police officer, his ladyfriend,
and himself. And it ended with a maniac wounding two New Bedford police
officers and a bystander before killing two and himself at the Foxy Lady.
What a pair of bookends for my hometown.
But that's all in the past now. 2007 is a clean slate. We ought to reflect
on the preceding year, take it for what it was, and move on. For, though the
media says otherwise, New Bedford isn't defined by the tragedies of 2006.
We're a far more complex city. We deserve better.
And we know it.
So, take a drink. Wave goodbye to 2006. And welcome 2007 with open arms.
