Social Commentary 136
November 14th, 2007

I love "60 Minutes". There's just something about the old school journalism, the tell-it-like-it-is reporting, and the even older reporters, that seems refreshing in the sterile, youth-and-faux-polish-centric modern era.
I don't know about you, but I feel that the reporting staff of "60 Minutes", especially Morley Safer, Mike Wallace, Bob Simon, Steve Kroft and Lesley Stahl, are the best in the business. Period.
Hell, Andy Rooney's the guy that got me into commentary journalism. I remember watching him when I was a little kid and, even at that tender age, thinking he was the funniest bastard around. Sure, he's gotten up in years. But he still manages to be relevant and funny at the same time.
Though I've never met any of the "60 Minutes" staff, I feel as if these are people I've known for (in some cases) decades. When these gems report on topics, I believe I'm getting sound, balanced news from people I can trust. I'm comfortable with them.
When Ed Bradley died, I bawled like a scalded child.
Tonight, Morley Safer reported on something known as "Millenials". "Millenials" is the catch phrase for the current coming-of-age, born between 1980 and 1995 generation. I more appropriately coined this generation the "me" or "pussy" generation a long time ago, and think either fit better than Millenials. Both more accurately describe our generation than Millenials. Millenials would be a more apt description for the, say, 1995 to 2010 crowd, as they're actually born in the time of the millennium.
The point of Mr. Safer's report can be summed up thusly: Millenials cannot take criticism, do not want to put much effort into a career or personal appearance, and always look for the easy way out. They refuse to take no for an answer, because their parents have always told them yes. Told them that even the most unrealizable goals are possible. Made sure every kid received a trophy/certificate just for participating. It's the generation that believes they deserve everything, because they've never been without.
The me generation is my generation. We're a bunch of selfish wusses that have had everything handed to us from day one. We have no understanding of the word commitment. We want it all and we wanted it yesterday.
Guess what, fellow pussies. We're destined for a big fat fall.
