Hello, reader.
If you read this column often, you know that it issues
weekly. You also know that I often have a hard time coming up with something
to write about. One can critique something only so many times before it
seems old hat. I, along with media in general, am definitely guilty of
repetition.
And I'm over it.
Unfortunately, repetition is just the way it
is with both the news and the column. I've had to accept that some things
never change. The same things that were in the social limelight when I
started writing this glorious column are still big today. Global Warming.
Iraq. Paris Hilton. Iran. Governmental corruption. Etcetera. Hell, even in
death, Anna Nicole Smith continues to make the news every day, her spectre
hanging over the American public like a vulture.
The monotony of it all is
highly discouraging. Almost makes you want to hike deep in the wilderness,
post up in a cave like a hermit, and etch an addendum to the Book of
Revelation on granite blocks. It's not original, but hey... everything's
been said and done before. It's how you go about the saying and doing that
matters.
Occasionally, the state of modern media and the place I occupy in
it has me asking myself, "Why the hell am I writing this thing? I'm saying
the same goddamned thing week in and out. I might be boring my
audience.'
'Shit. Who am I kidding? I don't even know if I have an
audience. For all I know, I'm my only audience."
And if I'm bored, you must
be, too.
But, don't take this little rant as an apology. I could care less
what you think about the column. I write for myself. And I'm getting sick of
being bored. So, in the words of the late great Owen Hart, "Enough is
enough, and it's time for a change!"
Fellow southcoast247.com columnist
Brooke Boucher and I have decided to swap columns for a week. She'll take
the wheel of Craig Cares, and I'll write up an extra special Sex and The
South Coast. It'll serve to break up the monotony, and give you new insight
into the minds of two columnists.
Just hope that I pass the censors.
So,
until next week, as the Iraqi government threatens to implode over religious
infighting, I ask you: How's that troop surge going, eh?
